It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved son and brother, Derek, on April 21, 2010 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital at the age of 60. Leaving to mourn, his mother and best friend, Mary Follett, brother Jeffrey (Emeline), sisters Ruth Trenholm (Don) and Janet Bate (Michael), nieces and nephews Heidi Rodgers (John), Jason (Gisele), Krista Rodgers (Tom), Matthew (Matt Malone), Great Grandnephew Elijah, as well his aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins, especially his Aunt Marj. Two daughters Meredith and Stacey. He will be sadly missed by his loyal companion Midnight. Predeceased by his father Henry 1984, brother Robert/Bob 1987 and grandparents.
Derek was a very unique individual who always had a kind, witty word and a sparkle in his eyes. Whether he was teaching on the reservations in Alberta, attending religious socials and political events with his mother, or frequenting Tim Hortons, he was always true to himself. Though his creative writings will never be published they will be always in the hearts and memories of his family. Special thanks to his friend and minister Rev. Wayne Cole, for his many kind words and support to the family, especially over the past several weeks, as well as the nursing & medical staff at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital for the superb care he received. The funeral service will be held Saturday April 24th at 2:00 p.m. from the First United Church, Park Street Rev. Dr. Wayne Cole officiating, with cremation to follow. The family will be receiving friends at Fillatre`s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark`s Avenue Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First United Church Redevelopment Fund.
