June Patricia Whitten

1939 - 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to June Patricia Whitten, beloved wife of Bishop Leonard Whitten. June passed away suddenly at Westmount Estates Retirement Home on March 10, 2024. June was born on June 28, 1939, on Bell Island, NL. She cherished her childhood home in Lance Cove for many years, long after she left there to attend Memorial University and receive a degree in Education. It was at Memorial where she met and married Leonard on August 3, 1964. She was a loving mother, teacher, homemaker, volunteer, choir leader, organist, and led a life dedicated to her family and her role with Len in ministry in numerous aspects in the Anglican Church of Canada. She made homes and many happy family memories in Labrador City, Gander Bay, Corner Brook, Port aux Basques, Mount Pearl and Pasadena where she was always able to balance a busy life with three boys, her career as a teacher and her many jobs within the church. June and Len retired in Pasadena, and later Corner Brook, after fulfilling careers, but continued their ministry with church involvement and outreach to many people, both locally and abroad. June especially enjoyed getting her hands dirty in their back yard garden, skiing with her friends in Pasadena, preparing meals for company and having visits from her grandchildren, who loved helping her with baking cookies and picking the garden vegetables.

Along with her loving husband Len, left to cherish June’s memory are her children: Geoffrey, Robert (Gail) and Christopher (Rhonda); grandchildren: Douglas (Abby), Kera (Caelan), Daniel, Leah and Rachel; great grandchildren: Arbour and Isla Bailey; sisters: Carol (Luis) Jimenez, Gertrude (Donald) Harvey and Eleanor Muise; sister in law: Stella Evans; brother in law: Ronald Whitten; nieces and nephews: Luis Jimenez (Itziar),  Lara Jimenez (Michael), and the many thoughtful ‘Whitten cousins’; as well as numerous other family members and friends.

June was predeceased by her parents George and Jessie Hiscock (Greenland); parents in law: Phoebe and Cecil Whitten; and brothers/sisters in law: Wiley Muise, Cyril (Phyllis) Whitten, Robert (Joan) Whitten, Marguerite (Herbie) Weir, Max (Blanche) Whitten, Murray Evans, Gertrude Whitten, Victor (Barbara) Whitten, and Mamie (Jack) Howlett.

She will be missed greatly, and her memory will be forever treasured by her family and friends.

Special thanks to Joy, Billy and all the Westmount Estates staff who cared for and supported mom as part of their family over the past year.

There will be visitation on Thursday, March 14 from the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Marks Avenue in Corner Brook.
