Obituary of Catherine Raphael Downey

Catherine Raphael Downey, 71, of Corner Brook NL passed away on April 11, 2024 at Western Memorial Regional Hospital. Throughout the past months and years managing various medical conditions, Catherine remained kind, compassionate and generous. Her humour and hearty laugh were ever-present. Consistent with Catherine’s wishes, there will be no funeral or wake; a simple cremation will be followed by the scattering of ashes.

Born in Corner Brook, NL to Joseph and Loretta Downey, she was the third of their nine children. After Presentation High School, Catherine continued her studies to become a Nurse’s Aide. Her entire career was at Western Memorial Hospital where she especially loved caring for sick children.

When not baking, reading or listening to music, Catherine found tremendous joy in a multitude of crafts and hobbies. The greater joy was found in presenting these gifts to many, many people over the years. Anyone receiving a package of “Auntie Kays Delights” knew they were in for a treat.

Catherine is survived by seven brothers and sisters, 22 nephews and nieces, as well as 21 grand-nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her brother Brian as well as her parents, Joseph and Loretta. The family wishes to extend boundless gratitude to Ms. Jane Broadbent, Catherine’s closet friend and someone who filled her life with Joy and laughter.

Catherine wanted to continue giving, even after her departure. In keeping with her spirit and wishes, an annual scholarship is being established to support and recognize those with a passion for pediatric nursing.
