Laura,
You are in my thoughts constantly as I know you are gathering strength from within and from your remarkable family to move through this heartbreaking time.
I have known you since you were a smiling and gorgeous little girl with those curls and only had the privilege of meeting Devon the last couple of years through you and the family.
What struck me immediately was how happy you both were. You made each other beam with joy and one could feel it in your presence. To have experienced such love and joy and be able to share that with others is a blessing.
Embrace that and allow it to build the strength and love within you. Ask yourself, “What would Devon want me to do?” He’ll guide you.

We are united in sadness and in love, we are celebrating the life of Devon, a son, a brother, a friend, a fiancé, a soulmate.
His departure has left an irreplaceable hole in our hearts and our families, yet his spirit, his smile, and his memories are here with us, within each one of us, and surrounding us.
Devon was a light in our lives, an inspiration, the embodiment of kindness and unconditional love, he touched all of our lives, he made a difference.
What made Devon truly extraordinary was his positive spirit, his wonderful optimism. He was always hopeful, resilient, positive.
Devon embraced life with open arms, lived every day to the fullest and made each moment count.
His smile and laughter was infectious, his smile penetrated our spirits and made each one of us smile. His smile was a way of life.
When you were with him and in his presence you were in the presence of pure kindness.
Our most treasured memories, those moments of pure joy, of love, are within in our hearts, and when we close our eyes and see him smiling he is with us and comforting us and giving us strength.

On behalf of the Gonzaga senior A varsity 2020 basketball team, we are devastated to hear the news about “Devo”.
Devo was not only a coach to us, but most importantly a friend and a mentor to us whilst we were maturing as young adults throughout high school.
Devo had taught us many valuable life lessons throughout his coaching tenure and encouraged us to live our lives to our fullest.

I only met Devon on a few occasions and saw he was a very outgoing and fun loving young man, the last time being a few weeks ago when my great granddaughter was visiting from Fort McMurray, Devon and Kylie (6 yrs old) was having quite the rambunctious

Dear Devo, our hearts are broken.
Our thoughts & prayers are with Laura, Sarah, Kathleen & David as we reflect on your special style, game for life & love of your big family. You always “embraced the chaos” & often times you & your “partner in crime, ScottyMac”, were the “catalysts of the chaos”!
For me I always admired your “game for anything” approach to new challenges. It didn’t matter if you had ever used a drill or circular saw before … in your mind it couldn’t be that hard & you would master it & you did! We only recently threw out all the broken drill bits & dulled saw blades that followed your progress! Your determination to learn a new skill was inspiring & entertaining!
Getting Snows Pond ready for a Big Weekend, Jim asked me to give you & ScottyMac a task … I chose carefully! Scrape & paint the metal flagpole. Not too much trouble you guys could get into with that task … “wrong again”! I gave you all the tools to remove “one long bolt”, a couple of scrapers & the paint. All was going great until you were ready to leave … “Uncle Andy we’ve gotta go, the flagpole is scraped & painted but we lost the bolt so we can’t tip it back up” … to this day I think you knew where the bolt was & you were enjoying “yanking my chain” … good on you man!
Remember getting Snow’s Pond ready for Daniel & Allison’s wedding! Jim was leading this family effort & you were in the middle of it! It was the day before the wedding & it was getting late. I wanted to finish clapboarding the extension but I was exhausted! I didn’t have much left to finish but there was “no more in the tank” & I didn’t want to do a poor job … “yes Harold”! You knew us all much better than we realized & your ability to assess a situation & offer a solution was uncanny … “Uncle Andy … I know you’re tired but we can get this done for D&A, I will help you even if it takes all night!” How could I let you down … you became a great “wingman” and all of us could count on you for support until the job was done!
I’ll never forget the “let’s call Uncle Andy before we blow the place up on New Years Eve” FaceTime! You & ScottyMac were about to light the propane heater in the white cabin & a little voice in your head whispered to you “let’s double check before we light a match”. I got the FaceTime call at Juniper Lake and we went through the checklist! The only out-of-control fireworks that night were on the pond!
There are many stories to tell from “lazyboy’s on a distant hill” to egging Aunt Sherri on to have another game of Crib when the “card god’s” were in your favour! Climbing the mountain in NR or portaging the 9 Gully’s at SP you were game & you always brought your own style & headband … we love that about you! Your big family is strong and we are supporting each other through this difficult time. I know you’re with us and that’s a comfort!

Devon when I met you, you were only 10 years old and right away you said that if Daniel ever didn’t want to be with me then you would have me, so from the very beginning you had my back and treated me like one of the family.
I remember babysitting you and Kathleen when Daniel and I first started dating and you always negotiated a deal – if I gave you a kiss on the cheek before you went to bed then you would go to sleep without an issue. Such a sweet simple request by the sweetest 10 year old boy.
5 years later I got to tag along on an amazing family trip to England where we made some incredible memories, one of which was when you, Daniel, Jamie, and I got lost on the buses at night in London and ended up in some very questionable areas. At the time it was terrifying (at least for me) but looking back on it, it was just another great cousin adventure.
I remember having the most fun making some of the Snow’s Pond Big Weekend videos with the cousins and watching you turn into Dj Worcestershire sauce, Jandy Rackson and Smee in the Neverland video, and one of the funniest anchors on the SPTV news team-”whoop there it is!”
Next up I had the honour of watching you dance at our wedding as part of the cousin flash mob. you were always up for having fun and if you could be with family at the same time, all the better in your eyes.
A random memory that came to me when thinking about you this past week was sitting next to you at a couple Dance Centre shows and trying to hold in my laughter as you would lean over after every dance and give a running commentary on your opinion of the song choice. It was a small thing but such a Devon move-bringing fun to every day moments.
I feel so lucky to have memories with you from countless Saturday morning coffees, birthday teas, hang outs at Leeds, and trips to Snow’s Pond and North River over the past 22 years. I will cherish these memories and always hold them close to my heart.
When you were with Devo you always felt like you had the best shoes, shirt, or hairstyle around because he so easily shared genuine compliments with everyone. If you were having a bad day, Devon would always make it better just by being in the room and what a truly wonderful gift that is.
Some of my favourite memories are when Devon first met Bailey and Kai and then watching their relationships quickly develop into two of the most uniquely special bonds I’ve seen. If there was a family gathering you could guarantee that the question ‘Is Devon coming?’ (and more recently, ‘are Devon and Laura coming?’) would be asked and if the answer was yes, prepare for the ear piercing squeals of joy. Kai called him the funniest person he knew and Bailey always talked about how he was her second uncle because they were so close and she loved him fiercely.
Devon made everyone he talked to feel special and he made Bailey and Kai feel like the most special people on the planet whenever he was with them. My heart breaks thinking about the time Bailey and Kai have now lost with Devon but then I think about how incredibly lucky we all are to have had Devon in our lives for the time we had. To be loved by Devon O’Grady is so special and we will carry on his joyful spirit, genuine love for family and friends, and silliness as we go through life. He will never be forgotten and is now part of all of us. Let’s spread his kindness, joy and love wherever we go.

As you grow older through life, often childhood memories fade but I’ll always remember getting to know Devo from the earliest days and playing soccer in the backyard of Sarah and Davids. Teresa and I had dinner with Devon and Laura in St. John’s last summer. We’d been friends at Brock but never had a hang out like this. We were honestly a bit nervous at first but those social nerves melted in the first 30 seconds. It was one of those nights where 4 hours just evaporated off the clock without us noticing. We laughed so hard. We ate delicious burgers and fries. We talked about their engagement story and how unique and special it is to work professionally with alongside your life partner. Teresa and I flew back to Toronto the following morning with sore cheeks from all the talking and laughing. When we heard the news we looked for a photo of that night but realized that, of course, it was a night where the phones stayed face down. We were having too much fun for distractions.
Devon was a special guy, and I’m sure our story with him is one of a million just like it. Sending our love and condolences to Laura and the rest of the family, he will be dearly missed but not forgotten.

I agree with everything I just read about Devon. I had hundreds of students at Gonzaga, and although it is often hard to remember them all, Devon was one I could never forget. For Devon did indeed brighten everyone's day and put a smile on everyone's face. I remember him fondly, and I am shocked that he left us far too early. It is a cruel weight to bear for one so young to leave us far too soon. I'm truly very sorry for your loss.

I was so shocked and saddened to learn of Devon’s death.
I remember him so well as a young 5 year old whose charismatic personality and infectious smile sure brightened and enlivened his Kindergarten class. During that delightful year, he and Scott MacDonald were inseparable. They always found a way to be together no matter what learning centre they had been assigned. True friendship!
His many accomplishments in his short life shows his obvious thirst for learning.

Devon had only worked at Poole Althouse for less than 7 months but a testament to his beautiful personality is that we can say the office will never be the same without him. His mere presence brightened the day of everyone around him and every interaction left you with a smile and a feeling of contentment that stayed with you throughout the day. Devon was a smile, a hug and a joy to be around. His laugh filled a room, and his love for Laura and his family were boundless. He loved his cousins, and even as a toddler wanted to go to Kindergarten with Nic his older cousin. He spent many happy hours with Nic and I, and never complained about the things I would cook for supper, unless it was Lemon Chicken (Deborah, you were trying to poison me). He spent many Saturday Coffee's playing riotous games with the children, or debating with Nic or Daniel about matters that could not be decided on. He was already planning for a way to make money so he could spend an early retirement with Laura and the rest of the family.

It’s hard to know where to start when remembering Devon. As a little boy, he was the adorable kid in my internship class. As he grew up, he stayed in touch and became a friend.
