Obituary of Walter Stanley Sheppard

Please share a memory of Walter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy heart that the family of Walter Stanley Sheppard announce his passing on May 13, 2024 at 80 years of age following the long goodbye of Alzheimer’s.

Wally will be remembered by his wife of 57 years, Trudy (Wilcox); his children Janice (Salem, MA), Tina (Ottawa, ON), Laura (Thane Tremaine, Aylmer QC), and Anna (Allan Haley, Sudbury ON); brothers Doug (Betty) and Ray (Sheila), and sister Pauline (Bob) MacAdam; beautiful grandchildren Aiden, Elias, Olivia, Rosa, and Rachel; and many other relatives, friends, and past colleagues. Wally is predeceased by son Jim, parents Ralph and Effie (Darrigan) of Lark Harbour, brother Ronald (Barb), and sisters Marguerite McKenna and Barbara (Baxter) Coles.

Wally was born in Cox’s Cove on March 2, 1944. Losing his father at the age of ten had a tremendous impact on Wally and no doubt fueled his ambition to succeed in life. After graduating with a history degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1965, Wally went on to take courses at Boston University in Massachusetts. After marrying in 1966, Wally and Trudy moved to Ontario and started their family before moving back to Newfoundland in 1974. In St. John’s, Wally worked as the Human Resources Manager at CBC, and in 1988 the family returned home to Corner Brook where Wally was Regional Manager for CBC. He and Trudy have lived there since. Throughout his life Wally had a keen interest in politics. He also loved fishing from a dory, berry picking, watching and playing sports – golf, hockey and skiing primarily - and travelling with Trudy to Thailand, Costa Rica, Greece, Alaska, Yukon, and many other places in Canada and the United States. After many years living with Alzheimer’s, he has taken his final journey.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, St. Mark’s Avenue location. A funeral service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Corner Brook on May 19 at 2 pm followed by burial at Mount Patricia Cemetery.

The family would like to acknowledge the hard work and kindness of staff at 3 North of Corner Brook Long Term Care Centre, and in lieu of flowers suggests that donations be made to a local food bank or to another charity that is important to you.
