Jean Hounsell

1928 - 2024

With the upmost sadness we announce the passing of Jean Hounsell, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and special aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Jean was born to Chris & Clara Leyte on September 5, 1928 in Eastern Tickle, Fogo Island.

Jean was predeceased by her soul mate and loving husband Walt, sister Sybil (Wilson) and brother Rex (Bessie).

Her family had the opportunity to share her last days with her in the palliative care unit of Victoria General Hospital Halifax N.S.

Today we mourn her death and celebrate her life as a family united. Sons David (Valerie) and Derek (Cherie): grandchildren Christopher (Kevin), Nicholas (Anna), special granddaughter Andrea and Jonathan (Nicole). Great grandchildren, Caleb, Logan, and Noah. Also left to mourn is her dear friend and sister-in-law of 76 years Aunt Floss.

Jean was a devoted Anglican who faced death without fear as she knew she was going to a better place to be with God and her soul mate. Jean practiced her faith at St. Thomas Anglican Church in St John’s NL. Jean served St. Thomas’s from 1957 until her move to Halifax in 2018 to live with her son Derek. She was a lifelong member of the ACW and a proud Feildian Lady. Jean was never one for praise but the one in the back making things work.

We want to express our gratitude to Dr. Poranek for her care of Mom over her 6 years in Halifax.

Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Sunday, May 26, 2024 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral Service will take place from St. Thomas Anglican Church on Monday, May 27, 2024 at 11:00am with an interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road.
