Obituary of Dorothy Michelin

Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Dorothy Maud Michelin (nee: Simms)  announce her passing on July 2, 2024, at the amazing age of 104.

Dorothy leaves to mourn her sons Richard (Carolyn), Reg (Joanne), Bernard and Stewart and her daughters Marguerite Hamel, Ethel Miller, Lynn Michelin, Norma Michelin and June Roberts (Derek) and daughter-in-law, Helen.  As well as 33 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren!

She is predeceased by her husband George, sons Raymond and Howard, grandson Derek Roberts Jr., great grandson TJ Michelin-Tuttle, sons-in-law Robert Hamel and Jerry Miller and daughters-in laws Margaret and Annette.  As the last remaining member of her family, she was predeceased by her parents John and Bertha Simms, and siblings: George, Robert, Frank, Reginald, Raymond, Norman, Jessie, Margaret, Jean and Catherine.

Dorothy will be remembered as one of the last of the original settlers to Birch Island. A strong and independent woman having lived and maintained her own home until the age of 100.  She loved travelling the country to spend time with her children and their families and take the occasional trip to Florida.  She could often be found playing crib, playing bingo or knitting in her rocking chair while watching her favourite tv shows.  Dorothy spent more than 80 years in Labrador and was a true woman of Labrador, an avid fisher and gatherer and wife of a trapper.

Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home in Happy Valley-Goose Bay Friday, July 5, 2024, between the hours of 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, 2 pm on July 6, 2024, at the United Church, Happy Valley-Goose Bay with Reverend Alice Moores officiating with interment to follow at the United Church Cemetery.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at the Labrador Grenfell Health Long Term Care Home in Happy Valley-Goose Bay for the care they provided during the past four years.

As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either HVGB Ground Search and Rescue, HVGB Special Olympics Team Howling Huskies or the Helping Hands Committee.
