Vivian May Butt

May 12, 1935 - July 5, 2024

Pinware, NL

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Vivian Butt. Vivian passed peacefully on July 5, 2024, in St. John’s, surrounded by family.

Vivian is predeceased by her son Kevin, her parents Luke and Maud O’Dell, and her sisters Dora, Madeline, and Genevieve.

She leaves to mourn with loving memories her husband, Gardner; children Anthony (Florence), Elizabeth (Larry), David (Mary Ellen), Gary (Janice), Helen (David), Hazel, and George (Clara); grandchildren Darren, Corina, Anthony, Tyrone, Naomi, Tammy, Tanya, Tanisha, Dana, Tasha, Neko, Ryan, Sierra, Rebecca, Keona, Luke, and Dylan.

Best known for her beautiful smile and her gentle nature. Mom was a soft-spoken and hard-working woman. She married the love of her life, her teenage sweetheart, Gard. They brought 8 children into the world. Mom believed parenting was the most important job in the world, and she devoted herself wholeheartedly to patiently and lovingly raising her children. An early entrepreneur ahead of her time, she was the owner-operator of a successful convenience store commonly referred to as “Viv’s.” She was a devoted Catholic, faithful to her religion. She was the most giving and generous woman, often opening her house to stray animals and to people in need. She was a passionate woman and her loyalty never wavered—from the Montreal Canadiens to Brad Gushue to the Liberals, she would never sway from her favourites. She loved to travel but was always eager to get back home to join her many friends at cards and bingo. She could listen to Wilf Carter and Hank Williams for hours on end. Her favourite pastime was creating beautiful knitted and crocheted items. She loved Christmas and bright lights, shopping, and jewelry. She lived her life to the fullest, and if we could have spent eternity with her, it still wouldn’t feel like enough. Her laugh was contagious, her love was pure, and the memories she has left behind show a legacy of determination and gratitude. The depth of our sorrow is the price we pay for having experienced the magnitude of her love. We take some comfort in knowing she is now reunited with our brother Kevin. She is and she will forever be missed.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 11th, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. from Our Lady of Labrador Roman Catholic Church, West St. Modeste, NL, with Father James officiating. Interment to follow at the Catholic cemetery in Pinware, NL.
