Marion Butt (nee Cooper)
July 20, 1934 – September 02, 2024
Mount Moriah, NL

Our hearts are broken with the passing of our dear mother, Marion Butt at the age of 90 years on Monday, September 02, 2024.  She leaves to mourn with loving memories her children, of whom she was extremely proud and close to: Cindy Taylor (Terry), Debbie Carroll (Neal), Rick (Donna), Peter (Angela).  Grandchildren: Krista Taylor, Alex (Scott Batten), Nick (Teddi), Lindsay Maxwell (Matthew), April, Emily (Kolton), Great Grandchildren: Macy, Lucas, Halle, Riley and another little girl on the way; her close Nephews and Nieces of whom she shared a special bond; and other relatives and friends; dear friends Patsy Butt, Margie Gosse and Leo Quilty.  She was predeceased by her husband of 37 years Bernard Butt (1992), her parents William and Tryphenia Cooper, her brothers Samuel (Angela) and Raymond, her sisters Martha (Chesley Reid) and Janet; her nephews Clement Reid and Vernon Reid, niece Janet Cooper Popovic; Brothers and Sisters-in-laws: Nelson and Philomena Butt, Gordon and Geraldine Butt, Raymond and Joan Butt, Edward Butt and Harvey Butt.

Mom was born on July 20, 1934 in Little Ridge, Trinity Bay, and moved to Whitbourne at the age of 10.  Upon graduating High School at 17, she attended MUN Teachers College.  She moved to Corner Brook near her brother Sam, who would soon become her best, lifelong friend.  Her first teaching position was in Mount Moriah where she stayed until the end of the second year and moved back home to help her Mom as her Dad was ill.  She then returned to Corner Brook and started a new career at NL Power, and met and married her husband, Bern of Mount Moriah. She was a stay-at-home Mom although she did have another few years teaching when her children were young.  Many years later, after Dad became sick, she went to work at Cash & Carry in Mount Moriah.

Mom was a strong woman, full of life and laughter. Everyone knew who the boss in our house was as she always did it her way.  Our house was full of family and friends who were welcome at our table as there was never any shortage of food. You never knew who was going to be at our home, but she gladly welcomed all.  Forever a ‘giver’, anything she had was gladly passed on and it was quite common to hear her say “What can I do to help?’ of which she passed on to her children.  The love of her family was her shining light and evident right up to her passing, wanting to know everyone’s daily schedule from Corner Brook to Vancouver.  Mom loved to have a good time, and was the life of the party. At 90 years of age, she still had her hair done weekly, loved to go for lunch and a ‘flick’, attend bingo and have a game of cards.  She lived a full life to the end and of that we will feel forever blessed.

The family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to Lohnes Complex for the care and compassion they showed Mom and to Dr. Alison Coleman and Dr. David Coleman for always being available to provide excellent medical care and attention.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 4th, 2-4 pm & 7-9 pm at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Avenue.  Cremation has taken place as that was her wish.   Funeral to be held on Thursday, September 5th at 11 AM at Fillatre's Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Edward King officiating.  Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery.

Mom requested an Irish wake where we would “Have a few drinks, dance and have a great party”.   Please join us at Cindy & Terry’s, 26 Lady Diana Crescent, Massey Drive anytime after 2pm, Thursday, September 5th to celebrate this amazing woman we will forever hold in our hearts.

As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
