I was made aware today that Dave had passed. I was shocked to say the least. I was planning to visit him this summer in his home town. We shared a wonderful friendship during his time in Edmonton, Alberta. Our love of Eckhardt Tolle and our many conversations surrounding his teachings helped us develop a strong bond of understanding and compassion. My interaction with Dave over lunches and dinners as well as conversations after he moved back east were memories I will cherish. My sincere sympathy to his family and friends. "Amazing human being" doesn't begin to describe my thoughts of Dave.

Dave was 10 years old when I first met him. I have fond memories of him running around the house in his too-short pyjamas and laughing. He had that big grin, his eyes were shining, and his black curls were flopping over his brow. You couldn’t not smile when you saw him. All these years later, that’s still how I remember him.

I knew Dave from my younger years when I was hosting a local community television show interviewing him and his band mates and through both his brothers. he was also friends with my sister and many mutual friends.he was always genuine and our communications over the years were always friendly and upbeat ...I will miss him and his welcoming smile. he was great inspiration and a very caring person my heart felt condolences go out to his children his family and many friends. When I moved to Corner Brook 15 years ago, I didn't know many people socially. But when I met Dave, he immediately felt like a best friend. He introduced me to others and got my social ball rolling. He was just that kind of guy.
We've had many long chats over the years, and some of them ran pretty deep about life and relating to people. He knew a lot more about life and mystery than he let on. He didn't preach about it - he "demonstrated it" in his relationships to others. That's what I admired most about him. He was truly a humble man.
In spite of all his talent and popularity, he never once thought of himself as any better than anyone else. He only ever reached out to enjoy a moment, and a laugh with whomever crossed his path.
If there is anything we can do to honour Dave, it is to look to him as an example of how we should treat each other. With kindness, respect, humbleness, and a good sense of humour.

To the McHugh family, I am at a loss knowing that Dave McHugh is no more. His memory will live on thru his music.
I remember meeting Dave when I attended the Westviking College, he played on Friday afternoon in the Cafe. He sang the song "Teenager" and many others of course, but it was the best music I ever heard. Since knowing Dave, I didn't miss too many at the John Cabot Lounge or now Langers. New years in the shed, I sat at my friends kitchen table and cheered him on as if we were on the dance floor. Today he's still playing his music for many more just in a different setting.
May you find peace and comfort in every memory as we know there are many. His smile, laugh, music lives on in all our lives. Hope peace finds you all.

I met Dave about 20 yrs ago in Goosebay...myself and close friends had many fun nights in the local pub, Mulligans, when he came to town. He was the only entertainer who would play 5 consecutive nights and we'd be there each night! Such a kind, friendly, funny, down to earth man...a truly special human being...not to mention an amazing musician and entertainer! Q: What will you never forget about David?
A: Dave was like a second father to myself and all of Evans childhood pals. His goofy personality and contagious smile always had a way of cheering us up! One memory that always sticks with me was on a winter afternoon at Marble Mountain. With his truck in the shop he had to rely on Becky's tired old Corolla to pick up myself, 3 others and a load of ski equipment. After we boarded into what felt like a clown car with skis hanging out the windows and bumper scraping the ground Dave turned around to deliver a stern message. " Buckle up boys, this thing goes 0-60mph in 35 minutes!" With all of us roaring with laughter in the backseat we, eventually reached the speed limit. Dave will be so missed by us all. My condolences to the family.

It's hard to know which memory to share about Dave. There are many. When I lived in Curling, my family and Debbie and Dave's family celebrated baby showers, kid's birthdays, and lots of school events. There are two memories of Dave that stand out. The first time I ever met him is one. He asked if I was a townie (St.John's) to which I replied, "No, I am from the Goulds". In less than 2 seconds, Dave said "Da Ghouls?!?" as if his cheeks were filled with gumballs. He had the Goulds accent down to a science. I laughed so hard. That was the very first encounter. Another memory is of the awesome Snowballs that Dave would make and bring to all the get-togethers for our kids birthdays or school events. Every mom wanted that recipe. Lucky for me, I got it. To this day, in fact, this morning, I made those Snowballs and I thought about whose recipe it is that we all enjoy so much. Dave will never be forgotten. Many, many people have been touched by his spirit throughout their lifetime. Similar sentiments ring through all these encounters with Dave... he made you feel good with a chuckle and a smile and he contributed to the world in an unforgettable way. I am sorry that he is gone. Rest in Peace, old friend.

To Dave's family;
I was so sadden to hear of Dave's passing. He was such good friend to me but Dave was good to everyone he ever came in contact with. He often spoke of his Mom and children, he beamed with light when he talked about his family.
When he came to Alberta to do some gigs, he always looked me up. He had a smile that could light up the room, he could draw in an audience and knew how to get the crowd going. Every time he played I say Dave, " sing me Little San Francisco". He'd laugh and then announce " I have to sing Little San Francisco for this girl up here because if not she won't talk to me no more", lol! He loved making people laugh and he loved seeing people being happy. Dave, you touch so many lives and made the world a much better place.
Hold onto the precious memories of Dave and I pray God puts his loving arms around you in the difficult days ahead.

Dear Ann:
My deepest condolences on the passing of your beloved son Dave. The beautifully written obituary left me crying profusely. My heart aches for you. I'll never forget the night Dave sang at Sacred Heart School for a fundraiser for Sacred Heart Church. The moment he started singing it was Wow! What a voice! I told my sister Caroline that Dave sang "Sweet Caroline" like Neil Diamond. I then sent her his CD and she loved it.
My family and I ran into Dave summer before last on the railway trail. He took the time to talk with each of us. It started to rain but he said he didn't mind the rain and we finished our conversation. It was a delight talking with him.
Ann, I know all your beautiful children will help you through this very sad time. My prayers and love to you and each of them and to Dave's children and other family members. Be rest assured that Dave will be spending Christmas with Jesus this year.

Our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to you all. Dave was one of the most remarkable individuals we had the privilege of knowing. When Dave shook your hand, you knew he was genuine. Dave was so kind, funny & caring. His talent was a class act, and he was multi talented. He was very charismatic and packed a full house wherever we heard him perform. When he saw us in his audience he would say, " I see George here tonight, I have "Mustang Sally" coming right up." with a big smile on his face. I will always treasure that act of kindness and loyalty as a friend.
His family was his Rock. He loved and respected his family beyond words. Just the mention of Rebecca and Evan, would make Dave light up with extreme pride, love and adoration. He would do anything for them. We are all so fortunate to have known Dave. His legacy will live on in his music, videos, and his friendships.

Condolences to Dave's family and friends. I remember a CD release show Kenny Campbell and I had at McHughs on Broadway, as a warm up for Dave. We got a lukewarm response from a sizeable crowd, but apparently they weren't there for us. As soon as Dave started playing, the floor filled with dancers and all seemed right with the world. He is fondly remembered.

He was truly a legend
The most genuine down to earth guy I was a little 11 year old Girl when I first experienced "Dave McHugh" singing the Macarena and that 11 year old girl was in love haha and through the years when I got old enough I went to whatever show or gig he was playing.. fast forward to me being 39 now living in lab city when he would be here I never missed a show i would probably sneak in if I wasn't old enough haha I was always that little st Anthony girl to him haha I'll forever miss him and that little piece of my childhood he took when he left this earth

I first met Dave in Kindergarten. We both had a part in the much anticipated production of The Little Red Hen. I was the narrator and he was a chicken. A fine chicken he was. Dare I say he got his first taste of the stage at the tender age of five and his starry eyes never turned back.
Growing up in the same neighbourhood we shared friends, teachers,bullies, families, snowball fights and life.
Later on ,whenever our paths would cross we reminisced about days gone by. He would remind me of some silly thing I said when I was ten, or we would joke about old tv shows and ridiculous commercials that were rolling around in our heads for decades.
Many times being the proud parents that we are ,we glowed about our children. Dave had an endless love and admiration for Becky and Evan; their success was his joy.
I could always count on Dave for a laugh and a smile. He brought moments of pure joy into my life and I am grateful to have called him friend.
The world feels a little less friendly without him. As many have said, he will be missed .
To his family, my deepest condolences. You have a special place in my heart .

He always had a smile on his face. When I would see him preforming at the bar, he always gave me a head nod and a smile. A great guy. His love of music was evident in all his performances. He will truly be missed.

I had the privilege of meeting Dave 37 years ago through friends at one of my favourite hangouts. His smile was infectious and his personality could light up a room and did. Over the years, I found that hadn't changed at all. We reconnected a few times in person or over text. I had the privilege of introducing him to some of my kids as well as my husband. They immediately took a liking to him as well. My daughter had tried to help him expand his audience in Alberta through the radio station she worked at and they along with the radio station, created a promo together. Dave was a brilliant musician and all around great person. He will be missed immensely and has left a void in this world. Dave, wherever you are, keep smiling and keep singing. ❤️

It was many years since I seen Dave. He came into our music store, Miramichi Nb,still we didn’t recognize each other. I seen a billboard Dave McHugh playing tonight. I thought could it be?
My husband took me there that night he was asking any newfies here? My husband spoke up yup Corner Brook!
Then said Dunbar ave he shut the set down asking me to come forward. I say it’s Melita! Dave put his guitar down as I approached the stage in disbelief as we shared a hug. I’m longtime friend of the Pike family, we all went to Cabrini together.

When Dave played here in goose bay at Mulligan's.i would always ask him to play the song brown eyed girl,he would always laugh at me and say but you have green eyes.lol...then if I went there a bit late as soon as I walk in he would start playing that song.he was so caring,loving,great singer,and that wide smile would always Britten your day.R.I.P my friend Dave Mc cutie,as he was known to us here in goose bay.

I was incredibly saddened and shocked to learn of Dave’s passing. He was a kind, gentle soul and always made time to say hello. We grew up listening to Dave and his band play at the local pubs on the Great Northern Peninsula. We loved him so much… May he rest in peace. Sending so much love to the family and friends of Dave. Dave was one of a kind and was always there to meet you with a smile, a song, a hello, a joke, or an amazing combination of all of it. He was the embodiment of kindness and was there whenever you needed him- playing countless benefits, children’s shows, and just when you didn’t need to hear a song he was there.
I remember tuning into his virtual concerts during the pandemic with a cold one (or two) and the comfort it provided to hear a little bit of ‘home’ was immense.
I will hold tight to the memories of going to McHugh’s and dancing on the dance floor, to him playing my cousin’s wedding, and all the little memories in between.
I will do an act of kindness in his memory ❤️

Ann and all the McHugh family we are so saddened to hear of such a fine musician and gentleman. He sure has created many memories to remember him by and many times after cruising we have wished we would have been on the cruise ship he was performing on listening to his great music. My husband and I remembers during Covid on New Years eve the shed party he had live on FB and we listened to until the end. It was one of our best New Years Eve ever. You are in our thoughts and prayers. RIP Dave.

I knew Dave when he was playing out Baie Verte he was one of the best, so down to earth I made sure that if he was out there I would be there, when he played and sang everyone came to life. Growing up in the next road in Curling, the Mchugh’s were a part of our lives. Good people. It was a pleasure to know Dave. He was so proud of his family. He never forgot where he came from. He made us feel the same way. Loved how he would get us in the audience going saying ok now let’s hear from the crowd from Curling then crowd from wherever. He was a true gentleman and friend. Never knew him really but he travelled here to fort Nelson bc to perform at the local pub a few years back. He approached me on fb to distribute flyers . Guess he saw I was a fellow newfie from deer lake lol. We always made a point to go as we enjoyed his music so much and he was so personable! Great guy! My heart is broken. I didn’t know Dave personally only by his music which I enjoyed listening to. I knew his mom from the post office where I worked and we had many wonderful chats. All good and laughs. Mrs. Mchugh was a beautiful person and she was the most pleasant person I ever met. She loved Dave so much and all her family. She spoke of Dave all the time and his travels.
