<p>John (Jack) McCarthy, affectionately known as "Senator McCarthy", passed peacefully away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Western Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He is predeceased by his parents Terrance and Jane; his sisters Mary and Geraldine; his nephew Leonard; his long time companion Sophia Bartlett and her daughter Joyce Sutton. He leaves to mourn daughter Judy Brake; cousin Kevin McCarthy (Eva); nieces and nephews Kenneth (Joan) Coombs, Patricia Taylor, Betty-Ann (John) Hammer, Geraldine McCarthy, Terry Payette, Michael (Kathy) Coombs, Margaret Holbrook; godchild Vikki Anstey and her family Gavin, Christina, and Gary Anstey, David Harris, Bob Nugent and Ruth Warner. In addition, he leaves many friends from within the Liberal Party in Newfoundland and Labrador and across Canada, as well as the Lions, bridge and Westmount clubs. Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Ave. on Wednesday, April 29<sup>th</sup> from 2:00 – 4:00, 7:00 – 9:00 and Thursday, April 30<sup>th</sup> 11:00 – 12:00. A funeral service will take place on Thursday, April 30th from The Most Holy Redeemer Cathedral on Mt. Bernard Ave. at 2:00 pm with Father Edward Terry officiating. Cremation will take place and interment will follow at a later date. As expressions of sympathy flowers are gratefully accepted or donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. </p>
