Mary passed away peacefully November 11, 2015 at WMRH, after a lengthy battle with several illnesses. She was 84. She missed her beloved husband Gordon every day. He predeceased her in 2013. Mary had no children, but adored her dogs, especially her last one, Jake, who comforted her in her grief and loneliness. Jake has found a new home with Marie Swannie, a good hearted and loyal friend of Mary's. Mary came to Corner Brook in 1962 from Montreal, where she was born and raised and received her education as an RN and a Bachelor of Science degree. Mary was placed in Corner Brook by the VON for 2 years as payback for a grant she had received. Once she met the many mothers, children and families she visited and helped daily, she was hooked on Newfoundland. Shortly after her arrival she was invited to join The Playmakers, where she met many of her life long friends and her future husband. Mary was an animal lover and an amazing cook. She was always helpful and generous to a fault, and she loved her chosen profession. Before Mary made Corner Brook her home, she worked as a stewardess for Trans Canada Airlines. She told many stories of those years, where she served personalities such as Louis Armstrong and Bob Hope, but also jumped in a passenger's lap during strong turbulence. Mary went along with her husband Gordon, when he was transferred to Labrador City and North Sidney. In Labrador City she was introduced to Kathryn Wright, who has remained a very close friend to Mary and who is to this day the biggest fan of Mary's cooking and kindness. She will be missed by her long time friend Judith Fraser, her colleague and close friend Marilyn Fleming, her niece Liz Fiorini, her step son Lee Tizzard and the Monaghan, Hatch, Fraser, Butt, Fleming, Burt and Wright families. Ursula Monaghan, Mary's friend of 45 years, will remember her as a good, kindhearted, head strong, intelligent and fun loving woman and will miss her - warts and all. There will be a visitation and celebration of Mary's life on Friday, November 13 from 7 pm to 9 pm at Fillatre's Funeral Home on St. Mark's Ave. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the SPCA. The guest book may be signed by visiting www.fillatre.ca.
