It is with great sadness that the family of the late John Matthews announce his passing on Thursday, February 7th, 2008 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital at the age of 84 years. John was the last surviving crew member of the SS Caribou that was torpedoed on October 14th, 1942 during the Second World War. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife Olive Matthews (nee Roberts) of 63 years, son Melvin (Betty) Matthews, daughters: Pauline (Gerald) Rees, Bernetta (Roy) Hoskins and Diane (Paul) Thistle, 11 grandchildren: John, Barbara Ann, Arlene, Sandy, Richard, Scott, Kim, Stacey, Dayna, Kelli and Aaron, 11 great-grandchildren, brother Stan (Shirley) Matthews. As well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Albert and Mae Matthews, brothers Jim, Isadore, Bill and Clarence, sisters Blanche and Laura. Granting John’s wishes cremation has taken place at Humber Valley Crematorium. Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Avenue on Friday from the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 9th at 2:00 PM from the Salvation Army Citadel, Premier Drive with Majors Robert and Cassie Kean officiating. As expressions of sympathy flowers graciously accepted or donations may be made to the Lung Association of NL.
