CECIL DELUNEY 1924 - 2008 Benoit’s Cove, NL It is with deep sadness that the family of Cecil Deluney of Benoit’s Cove, NL announce his passing at Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Tuesday, February 19, 2008. Cecil was born January 26, 1924 in North Sydney, NS to John and Alice Deluney. He was the youngest of five sons. In 1926, Cecil and his brothers moved with their father to Woods Island, NL where he lived with his maternal grandparents, William and Amelia Pennell, until his adult life. On February 10, 1947 he married Catherine McCarthy and they raised 14 children together. In 1961, the couple resettled from Woods Island to Benoit’s Cove along with many of their extended family and friends. Cecil worked as a fisherman and laborer throughout most his life. In retirement , he enjoyed spending time walking in the woods, hunting, picking berries, and gathering firewood. During the summer and fall months he loved spending time with his wife at their cabin on Woods Island where he spent hours fishing and combing the beaches. He is survived by his wife, eight sons: William, Richard (Christine), Ronald (Helen), Howard, Brian, Robert (Gayle), Neil, Donald (Susan); five daughters: Joanne, Jocelyn Connolly (James), Lisa Jesso (Keith), Michelle (Gary Sheehan) and Nicole (Gary Russell); twenty eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant child; a daughter, Elaine; and his four brothers; Leo, Wallace, Samuel and Albert. The funeral will take place on Friday, February 22nd, 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Benoit’s Cove, followed by interment at the church cemetery. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, February 20th from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, February 21st from 2-4 and 7-9:00 p.m. at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 218 Curling Street. Memorial donations may be made to the Elaine Deluney Patient and Family Resource Centre at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre or the Palliative Care Unit at Western Memorial Regional Hospital.
