Passed away peacefully in the early morning of May 28th, 2006, Dr. Doris Jean Saunders CM, LLD, in her 64th year. Doris is united in Heaven with her husband Frank (1935-1987) and her parents Donald & Harriet Martin. She is survived by her son Howard; daughters: Vivian and Gillian; sons-in-law: Larry Rademacher and Tony Applin; son of the heart Frank Martin-Ferrano (Darlene); granddaughters: Jillian Dyson (Chad), Heather Brown, Heidi Applin; step-grandchildren Travis and Tara Rademacher; siblings: Rose Carew, Lorenia Sampson, Tom Martin (Shirley), Barb McGowan, Betty Davis; sister of the heart Ethel Decker; Don and Una Saunders; aunts Mary and Margaret; extended relatives and her dog Tom. Doris was passionately involved in many things throughout her life: The Cartwright Girl Guides, St. Peter's School activities, her job as a cutthroat in the fishery, playing softball and broomball, coaching minor softball and hockey, arts & crafts, preserving Labrador history, being ship mother to the HMCS GOOSE BAY crew, enjoying the Labrador wilderness and devoting herself to her grandchildren. Through her commitment to THEM DAYS, Doris received many awards including the Order of Canada (1986) and an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Memorial University (1994). She was also well recognized for her finely skilled single-thread embroidery. Doris, a proud Labradorian, proud of her Aboriginal ancestry and who she was, made great efforts to ensure that same pride was instilled in others and that Labrador was well known and respected. Funeral Services took place from the Pentecostal Church in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Wednesday, May 31st, 2006.
