Mr. Justice Frederick Ronald Woolridge
Passed away at Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Corner Brook, Newfoundland, in his 70th year. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Aileen (Clare) Woolridge, his daughter Alison and her husband Brian Marler, his son Nicholas and his wife Lianne Friesen, and his beloved grandsons Aaron and Theo. He will be mourned by his mother-in-law Nettie Clare, brother-in-law Howard Lemessurier, his niece Renée Lemessurier and her family, and his nephews Frank and Shane Lemessurier and their families. Fred was predeceased by his mother Dorothy Ebsary Woolridge, father Frank Woolridge, father-in-law Raleigh Clare, and sister Cynthia (Woolridge) Lemessurier. Fred will be fondly remembered by a wide circle of friends and colleagues. Fred began his first career as a broadcaster on St. John`s radio station VOCM as a teenager, motivated by a desire to own a car. This passion for mechanical transport would last a lifetime, seeing him acquiring, fixing, and riding numerous cars and motorcycles, as well as obtaining his pilot`s license in 1961. In 1957, he received his BA from Mt. Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, putting himself through school as a radio and television announcer. He received a law degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1960, and married Aileen days after his gradutation. He first practiced law in St. John`s, before moving to Corner Brook in 1962. He was a partner at Martin, Easton, Woolridge, Poole, Althouse and Clarke when he was made a judge in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland (Trial Division) in 1985. He retired from the bench in 1999. In addition to planes, cars and motorcyles, his passions were varied. He skied Marble Mountain, told funny stories, enjoyed sailing on his friend Ed`s boat, made great soup stocks and could harmonize to any tune. He took special pleasure in seeing his daughter Alison perform on stage, and in his grandchildren Aaron and Theo. The family would like to thank dear friends Cyril and Frances, and the staff of the fifth floor at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital for their kindness and dedication. At his request, there will be no service. If desired, memorial donations can be made to the Western Memorial Regional Hospital Foundation, Frederick Woolridge Fund in Aid of the Fifth Floor Alzheimer`s Unit.
