Passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 3rd, 2007 at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, following a brief illness. Born in 1920 in Salmon Cove, Conception Bay, she grew up in nearby Perry’s Cove. In 1943 she graduated from the General Hospital in St. John’s as a Registered Nurse and worked in a number of Cottage Hospitals throughout Newfoundland. In 1949 she accepted a nursing position at the Cottage Hospital in Stephenville Crossing, where she met and married William L. “Hap” Shears, who predeceased her in 1975. Nellie was active in the Anglican Church Woman’s Association for over 50 years, as well as the Masonic Ladies Auxiliary and the Woman’s Institute. She is survived by her sons: Claude (Kathy) of Porter’s Lake, NS and Lloyd, Vancouver, BC; granddaughter: Carolyn Harris (Corey), Dartmouth, NS; grandsons: John Shears, Calgary, AB and Mark Shears, Porter’s Lake, NS; brother-in-law: George Dingwell, along with a large circle of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her brother Reverend Guy Case and his wife Eileen, Napanee, ON, and her sister Joyce Dingwell, Corner Brook. Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, Stephenville Crossing on Monday, 2-4 and 7-9:00 p.m., and Tuesday, 10-12 noon. The Funeral Service will take place at All Saint’s Anglican Church, Main Street, Stephenville Crossing on Tuesday, February 6th at 2:00 p.m., followed by interment in the church cemetery. Following interment, please join the family at the Shears residence, 44 Main Street, Stephenville Crossing. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or donations may be made to All Saints Anglican Church, or to a charity of ones choice.
