GILLIS
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Alfred Gillis announce his peaceful passing at Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre in Port Aux Basques, on Sunday, July 22nd, 2007 at the age of 89 years. He leaves to mourn his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Bertha (nee Hammond); sisters-in-law Gertrude Gillis, Codroy and Julia Belmer, New York; brother-in-law Pat (Celine) Hammond, Long Harbour; many special nieces and nephews, especially Beverly (nee Hammond) Hicks, Codroy Valley, along with a large circle of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by parents Edwin Joseph and Sarah (nee Blanchard) Gillis; step-mother Margaret (nee MacArthur) Doyle; brothers: Wallace and Micheal; sisters: Mary, Anne and Leila. After returning from serving his Country in the Forestry Unit, Alf started working on his many businesses. He began by playing his accordian for dances in Codroy, along with his brother Mike. From there he went on to building Gillis’ Store, a movie theater, Gillis’ Cabins, Codroy Valley Farm Supplies and The Chignic Lodge. Family and friends are being received at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Upper Ferry on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m., from where the funeral service will take place on Thursday, July 26th at 10:30 am, with Father Lee Lainey officiating. Interment will follow at Mount St. Thomas Roman Catholic Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers will be graciously accepted or donations may be made to St. Anne’s Guild or Dr. Charles LeGrow Health Centre.
