Baxter James (Jim)
Yates
June 20th, 1933 - December 14th, 2008
Passed peacefully away at Carbonear General Hospital on Sunday, December 14th, 2008; Jim Yates after 75 good years. He will be sorely missed by his loving wife of 52 years; Marjorie (nee Ackerman), his children; Bruce (Kerry), Myrna (Brad Moss), Carl (Linda), Lori (Peter Upshall), Christine (Glenn MacLean), his precious grandchildren; Stephanie Farrell and Faith Yates, Vance (Corinne), Ryan (Angie), Lori-Ann, Sarah, and Caleb Moss, Shane and Matthew Yates, Andrew, Dylan, Jacob and Samuel Upshall, Connor, Liam and Aidan MacLean, and his treasured great-grandchildren Abigail Moss and Isaac Moss as well as his dear brother Clarence, and his dear sisters Georgina, Joyce, Gladys and Betty and many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his parents Nellie and George Yates. He was a friend to many. Born in Howley, the youngest boy of 14 children, he skated the ponds, snared rabbits and caught too many trout to count until he found a cute school teacher (yes, it was Marge, of course) from Cupids. After they settled in Deer Lake to raise a family, he went to work for Bowaters Woods Dept. traveling the province befriending all he came in contact with. He later took positions with Bowater Power, Deer Lake and Bowaters in Corner Brook. Jim was very involved in his church and his community. A gifted musician and singer, he could often be seen playing the piano before the church service or singing in the back row of the choir. He was a past master and third degree mason of the Masonic Lodge – Humber Chapter. He was an avid fly fisherman, always planning his next trip on the river. He was a connoisseur of fine grub (or any grub) - be it a boil-up in the woods or a 5-course buffet at 21 Middle Road. A debt of gratitude goes out to Dr. R. Farrell, Dr. Jayram and the wonderful nurses and staff of Carbonear General Hospital for your professionalism, dedication and the dignity you gave Jim and his family. Your efforts will not be forgotten. Friends and family are invited to share in the memories of Jim at Fillatre’s Funeral Home in Deer Lake on Tuesday, December 16th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church, Deer Lake on Wednesday, December 17th at 11 am, Rev. Dr. Tony Newell presiding.Expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Accessible Church Fund of St. Paul’s United Church.
