November 10, 1927 – December 19, 2019
It is with deep sadness, but gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the peaceful passing of Jean Simms, on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at Western Memorial Regional Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit, Corner Brook, at the age of 92.
She leaves to mourn with many fond and loving memories, her sisters, Olive Joyce Rowsell, Dora Clarke (Donald), Margaret Brake, Joyce Simms and brother, Rick Simms. Also left with many beautiful and lasting memories from daily life spent together, her immediate family, sister-in-law, Isabel Simms (brother Walter, predeceased), nephew, Glen Simms, wife Sherra Robinson, and their daughter Sophie and niece, Linda Chadderton, husband Anthony, and their children Laura and Michael.
Jean also loved, and cherished time spent with, her many other nieces and nephews: Victor Rowsell (Rose), Bill Rowsell Jr. (Liz), Brian Rowsell, Linda Brown, Judy Parsons, Brian Howlett (Cathy), Betty Musseau, Shawn Clarke (Andrea), Terry Clarke (Geraldine), Craig Clarke (Gwen), Dale Armstrong (Bruce), Ford Flight Jr. (Sharon), Walter Flight, Todd Flight (Ana), Rodney Flight, Susan Gill (Otto), Joyce Flight Brown (Rob), Meta Perry (Ray), Ned Brake Jr. (Christa), Shauna Osorio (Freddie), Shane Simms, Rory Simms, Scott Simms, Glenn Simms, Londa Simms, Mark Simms and Michelle Simms, as well as many great-nieces and nephews, too numerous to mention, but adored by Jean. She also loved and valued her relationships with many other extended family, life-long friends and neighbours.
Jean is predeceased by her loving parents, Cornelius and Meta Simms, and in addition to Walter, brothers, George Simms, Glenn Simms (Judy) and half-brother Bronze Simms (Ethel); her loving sisters, Norah Howlett (Raymond) and Joan Flight (Ford); brothers-in-law, Bill Rowsell Sr., Ned Brake Sr. and Fred Raines; nieces, Toby Brake and Belinda Mullett.
Jean was a true daughter of Corner Brook. She had many wonderful memories of friendships made while working during the heyday of Broadway at both Marshall’s Western Variety and Morris Gordon Ltd. She took great pride in a job well-done.
The visitation will take place at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Avenue on Friday, December 20, 2019 from the hours of 2 – 4pm and 7 – 9pm from where the funeral service will be held in Fillatre’s Chapel on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 2 pm, with Rev. John Van Vliet officiating. Internment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. Flowers, or donations is Jean’s memory to a Charity of one’s choice, will be graciously accepted.
Special thanks to Dr. Mark Smallwood and his secretary, Judy, for their caring attention, the staff of Mountainview Retirement Centre, as well as the wonderful doctors, nurses and Chaplain Charlene Laing of the Palliative Care Unit. Also, thanks to all family and friends who visited and gave support in the past few weeks but extra-special thanks to nieces, Dale Armstrong and her husband Bruce, Betty Musseau and Meta Perry for assisting with overnight stays at the hospital. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
Aunt Jean will be deeply missed and ever remembered for her joyous spirit and generous manner. How privileged we have been.
