Murphy Vera (nee Sheaves) Corner Brook, NL, October 29, 1922 - Feb 16, 2020 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Mrs. Vera Murphy at the age of 97 on Sunday, February 16th, 2020 at Western Memorial Hospital after a very sudden illness. Vera was born in Port Aux Basques October 29th, 1922. She met her loving husband, Thomas Murphy, at a dance during World War II in Sydney, Nova Scotia, while he was in the British Navy. Following the war, she moved to Scotland with their young son Gerald “Gerry”. A few years later they moved back to Newfoundland to raise their family. She is survived by her 3 children Gerald and Noreen Murphy, Maureen Murphy and Reg Barry, Kathleen Murphy House and Dominic House; her grandchildren Stephen Murphy (Krista Fudge), Sean Murphy (Tina Delaney), Janice Murphy (Dennis Shelley) Gregory House (Meaghan House), Andrew House (Christy Coffey), Jennifer Barry (George Forward); and great-grandchildren Leah, Megan, Madeline, William, Aislin, Isabella; numerous nieces and nephews, her sister-in-law Margaret McGoldrick and her dear friends Liz Ann Oke, Malcolm Turner and other relatives and friends. Vera is predeceased by her husband Tommy, Murphy, her parents Alfreda and William Sheaves Port Aux Basques, her in-laws Thomas and Margaret Murphy, Glasgow, Scotland, and all her sisters and brothers (Reginald Sheaves, Harold Sheaves, Albert Sheaves, Clem Sheaves, Frank Sheaves, Alice Pike, Marie Sharpe, Irene Purchase, George Sheaves, Rita Sheaves, Lewis Sheaves, Fred Sheaves, Agnes Sheaves) and her sister-in-law Helen Lloyd. Special thanks to Dr. David Coleman who has provided such excellent care for mom over the years and to the staff of Mountainview Retirement Home where mom resided since 2015. Both Tommy and Vera were very active life long members of the Scottish Heritage Society. Vera continued to sell tickets to the annual events well into her late 90's, particularly the Robbie Burns Night where she loved to dance and reconnect with old friends. Over the years, Vera proudly managed Tom's music teaching career as well as their lovely home. She was an excellent baker as many residents from Corner Brook can attest to as she gave most of it away. She loved her family deeply and always bragged about them to everyone. She was a devout Catholic and prayed the Rosary faithfully every day. May she rest in peace as she rejoins her loving husband in heaven. Visitation will take place from Fillatre’s Funeral home at 4 St. Marks Avenue in Corner Brook on Thursday from 2-4 pm and Thursday night 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held Friday, February 21 at 10:00 am at All Hallows Church on Humber Road with Father Edward Terry officiating. Internment to follow at Mount Patricia Roman Catholic Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Hallows Church or Western Memorial Hospital Foundation.
