Etta Mary
Corner Brook, NL
1923 - 2020
Etta Mary Conway (nee Doody) passed peacefully away at the Corner Brook Long Term Care Home on March 27th, 2020 at age 96. She was predeceased by her husband Jack, daughter Theresa, granddaughter Jackie, and her dear brothers and sisters. To share stories, witticisms and memories, she leaves behind her children: Gerri, John (Lorraine), Molly (Doug), Jim (Doll), Jean, Tina (Mark) and a long list of grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Grant, Renee, Wayne, Jodi, Marilyn, Jolene, Johnny, Jamie, Krista, Nick, Maegan, Alyssa, Taylor, Marcus, Kelli, Samantha, Kate, Aaron, Max, Kyla, Brayden, Jackie, Jakob, Johnny, Hendrix, Lilly, Max, Scarlett, Brittany, Jack, Thom, Emery, and Myles. She was lucky enough to have two great-great-grandchildren: Ryan and Patrick. She will also be greatly missed by her nieces, nephews, and friends, especially her dear friend Joyce Audeau. She had a special place in her heart for Maggie the dog and Charlie the cat, who continue to wander the house looking for her and the treats she always had on hand.
Etta was born on Little Colinet Island, moved to Brooklyn as a teenager where she married Jack, and spent her adult life between Ontario and Newfoundland. She loved visits and tea with her family and friends. She was quick-witted and people delighted in her wry (and sometimes inappropriate!) observations. She loved watching her beloved Maple Leafs, puttering amongst her flowers and baking apricot cakes for fundraisers at All Hallows Church, where she was a devoted parishioner.
She loved her garden, especially her roses, which were giant and vibrant. She enjoyed watching birds through her window when she couldn’t get outside any longer. She treasured seeing butterflies flitting around, as they reminded her of her sisters who had passed away. Think of her when you see these things blooming or fluttering about in the spring.
Special thanks to the many doctors and nurses who cared for Etta throughout the past few years: she had her share of medical challenges but was always quick to bounce back, and consequently everyone close to her was convinced she was invincible. She made an impression on the medical staff who cared for her during these times, and the family sends their gratitude. Special thanks are extended to Dr. O’Connor and Tony, Dr. Lafferty and Dr. Smallwood, and the nurses and staff of 3 North at Long Term Care: your kind care and compassion will always be remembered. Special thanks as well to Father Ed Terry for his presence and blessings, she looked forward to his regular visits.
Cremation has taken place; a funeral and celebration of life will occur at a later date.
“Everyone must leave something behind when he dies...a child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you're there.”
