So many happy memories are coming back to me as I think of Grandfather. Only now am I realizing how lucky my brother and I are to have had Grandfather and Grandmother be such a big part of our lives (especially our childhoods). I remember flying with him in his plane over Labrador City, watching the northern lights as he whistled at them to make them dance, the toad I caught and they let me keep in their house as a pet, the tadpoles we put in their aquarium to watch them grow, perfectly barbecued steaks (I will never be able to do them as good). I could go on forever.
I also remember being a very young boy at their house on Lakeside Drive and hanging out with (more likely being a nuisance to) my uncles and aunt. I remember their home being very warm and welcoming- I felt wanted and loved. As an adult many years later when I and my own family visited Grandfather and Grandmother, I still felt the same.
Grandfather, I will miss visiting with you when I am back in Newfoundland again. Even though I have lived away for many years, it was comforting to know you were there. You will always be with me in my memories, but I know and feel there is something missing- something is different and not quite right.
You set a great example of how to be a Grandfather. I can only hope that when my turn comes to be Grandfather, I can live up to that example and make you proud.
I love you.
Cory (with Renee, Emma and Noah).
