Obituary of Eleanor "Onnie" Dobbin
May 29, 1934 - August 29, 2020
"Laughter is the sweetest human music; the medicine of the soul..." Dan Gascon
"Onnie"...mention her name to almost anyone who knew her, and you will see a smile, and hear a story...about the time she rode a horse from Port Saunders to Corner Brook to raise money for the church, or when she danced to "Tequila" during Come Home Year celebrations, or rode strapped to the seat of her sister Goke's skidoo during a Poker Run.
Her friends were many, and age was certainly no barrier, as the many who hung out at the Teen Spot will tell you. Her amazing young pallbearers had agreed years ago to be at her funeral, and they were; in some cases rearranging complicated schedules to do so.
Onnie was born in Port Saunders, to Jack and Louise White on May 29, 1934. She was the youngest of ten children, and was raised in a large extended family; loved, beautiful, and gifted. Their home was a place where people gathered, and as a young woman, she was part of a magical circle of friends and adventures.
In 1963, her life took a new direction. She married Pat Dobbin, a handsome young man who had loved her forever. Soon after, Derrice was born, and she soon became a special child for so many of us.
Living to be 86 is a mixed blessing. Life takes you down so many different paths; some wonderful, many challenging. At the time of her death, Onnie had seen most of her family and many of her friends reach the end of their journey; among them her husband Pat, and her daughter Derrice.
But she never lost her gift for bringing laughter.
Onnie spent her final years in the Northern Retirement Home in Port Saunders. It was truly amazing and uplifting to see and hear, the genuine love and concern the staff there felt for her. So many of them talked about the bright light of fun and playfulness they would miss so much.
She was a "character" for sure, in the true Newfoundland sense of the word.
Aunt Onnie, as you begin this new chapter in your journey, reunited with so many of those you love and who love you, I wish you laughter and joy, but most of all, I wish you peace and happiness.
God Bless!
