Please share a memory of Minnie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
March 2, 1937 - November 12, 2020
Minnie Bertha Merkuratsuk (Nee: Ukuatsiajuaq), lived in Nain and passed away in
Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL on November 12th, 2020.
Minnie was born on March 2nd, 1937 in Kangiqsualujjuaq/George River, Quebec. Her family
lived a very strong cultural and traditional way of life. A life of living off of the land, to hunt,
fish, trap and gather with which she shared the same lifestyle with her husband Jako Mirkoratsok
whom she met up North and together, they had many children.
At around age 22, Minnie and her family were forced to relocate from Hebron to Nain in 1959
by the provincial government. Despite the hardships she endured, she, her husband and family
still lived off the land carrying on the Inuit way of life in many places all over the North Coast of
Labrador. Having cabins at Silotalik, mainly during the summer to fish; and Tasiujak during the
winter and spring seasons. They would stay at these locations for the spring and return to Nain
by boat to stock up on more food and supplies.
Minnie was very talented, she was an amazing seamstress. She hand-sewn such things as
sealskin mitts, sealskin boots, dickies, wool socks, wool mitts/gloves, wool blankets and many
other items her and her family needed. One of her many skills included preparing hides such as
cleaning sealskin, fox fur, wolf fur, otter, black bear and polar bear to help make clothing for the
winter seasons. Her children, and grandchildren now share this important skill that she has
passed down to this day.
She and her husband also participated in many cultural, land-based activities for Youth and
Adults alike when such programs were being held. She was also an Ilusivut teacher with local
school students for many years, teaching students how to knit. Minnie spoke her mother tongue,
Inuktitut, and encouraged others to learn and speak the language.
Minnie is survived by her children: son Eli (and wife Hulda), daughter Maria, son Buddy (and
wife Jenny), daughter Bony, daughter Emelia (and husband Jack), son Jacko (and wife Ben-Sue),
Elizabeth and (adopted) son Sonny. Along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren,
great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
She is predeceased by her sisters Elizabeth, Siasi (Sr.) and Siasi (Jr.), husband Jako, sons
Simeonie and Junta (John and wife Emily), daughters Benigna, Louisa, Emelia and Regina,
grandsons Simeon and Johnny, granddaughter Tina (John and Emily).
The family would like to express their gratitude and many thanks to the staff at the Long Term
Care in Happy Valley-Goose Bay who watched over her in her last years, and to countless many
others who helped in any way, Nain and throughout Labrador. Nakummek
