The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of 3B Medicine and Mountainview Retirement Home, for their care and compassion and a special thanks to Coady LaFosse, community health nurse, for his dedication and excellent care for Marie during the past year.

Marie Phoebe Eveleigh (mom/nan/nanny) was born in Brown’s Cove near Hampden White Bay on December 29th, 1930, the sixth oldest of eight brothers and sisters, daughter of James and Susannah (Gavin) Eveleigh. Her father ran a sawmill and her mother was the local midwife and only health care provider in their community for many years. Marie often recalled how people would be constantly coming to their home for all kinds of medical emergencies. - their door was always open to help those in need of medical attention or food.

At the young age of 15, Marie moved to Corner Brook to help her sister care for her young children. It was here she met 18 year old Ron - who was working for Bowater Woodland’s Operation - and the rest is history. Marie and Ron were married on December 1st, 1947. They had four boys, Bob, Bruce, Wayne and Kevin and finally to Marie’s delight, a girl, Rhonda.

Except for a brief stint working in retail, Marie was a stay at home mom - a homemaker.

Her life revolved around home and family. Everyone  joked you could “eat off the floors” at her house. She was a meticulous housekeeper and  an extraordinary cook - famous for her turkey dinners and scrumptious desserts. Everyone (adult kids, grandkids) always got a delicious home made birthday cake (complete with her “mystery icing”) from Marie and a card (with a monetary gift inside) - she never forgot a birthday!  Marie was generous to a fault - never wanting to spend anything on herself - always giving to others. Everyone knew not to eat before you visited Marie and Ron, as Marie never let you leave her house without ensuring you ate something (whether you were hungry or not !)

In later years even when Marie got ill, she refused to slow down - she continued to try and do things on her own as long as she possibly could -  her motto was “ you can’t give up” and she lived by this mantra as long as she could!

Marie will be remembered for her generosity and her fighting spirit! She will be sadly missed and ever remembered by both family and friends!
