My grandma and my grandpa were married for 67 years, and have shown us all the meaning of true love.
She was kind, soft spoken, and oh so witty. Everyone who knows my grandad will often speak of how funny he is (which is true) but deep down I have always felt my grandma held the title of funniest grandparent.
She was the true definition of beauty & grace. Not a hair left uncurled, not an eyebrow left unplucked. I can still vividly see her putting her “rollers” in her hair before bed, and sitting in front of the patio doors, as the sun shined in, with a mirror in one hand, and tweezers in the other.
My favourite childhood memories are those spent at my grandparent’s house. Ironically, it’s the days I was home sick from school that I loved the most. In fact, quite a few of those days, I was indeed, not sick at all. Pulling the wool over my mom’s eyes, off to gram’s house I would go. A bed on the couch would be made upon my arrival, accompanied with a glass of 7-Up and a bowl of ice cream. We would spend the day watching her “stories.” I can still remember the order in which they aired; General Hospital, All My Children, Young & The Restless, Days of our Lives. You could go months without being sick, and return to grams to the same story line; Marlena still possessed by the devil, Natalie still trapped in the well.
Her face never without a smile, her purse never without DoubleMint gum & Halls, and her home never without the smell of something cooking/baking. You couldn’t go to grams house & leave without eating something.
I am so glad she got to meet her great granddaughter, Harlee. She might not have known who she was, but the smile she put on her face as she reached for her hand, and held her in her arms, I’ll remember forever.
After a long & courageous battle with dementia, God has now called her “home,” and I can only hope that heaven brings her all the happiness & love that her “home” has always brought to us.
