I wish Jasmine and I could be there with you all! Our lives have been incredibly enriched for having known Aunt Elva. Our annual family treks home to Newfoundland and “up the coast” were always a highlight of our summers, and that of our daughters, Chloe and Emmelie.
Our many memories include sharing several wonderful activities that are unique to the humble life of outport Newfoundland - picking wild berries in the nearby fields, barrens, and bogs, taking boat trips in the harbour with the fisherman neighbour, catching toads around the back door, helping out in the yard and garden, exploring Frank’s Point across the road, and having nightly campfires on the beach.
These activities were typically capped off or interspersed by tasty Newfoundland meals shared with Aunt Elva around her kitchen table, and long and meaningful conversations with Elva around her living room about her Newfoundland life, past and present, world politics, the latest books she had read, and spiritual revelations.
Even though they lasted for days, our Plum Point trips never seemed long enough to soak up enough of the rich culture and abundant life which surrounded us.
While our trips to the Great Northern Peninsula will hopefully continue, we will miss the wisdom, wit, and wonderful smile of our much-loved Aunt Elva. We know she is now in an even better place, and until we join her there, we will continue to walk this world holding tightly onto all that we have learned from this unique and beautiful lady.
