Obituary of Elva Harriet Spence
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Elva Harriet Spence announce her
passing at the Rufus Guinchard Health Care Centre in Port Saunders, NL on Sunday
May 15, 2022 at the age of 86. She leaves to mourn with many fond and loving
memories, her sister; Emmeline Denney, nieces; Jacqueline Fudge and Jasmine Cull,
Brother; Kenneth (Mary), nieces and nephews; Anita, Veronica, Nathan, Jeremy and
Alyssa – Joy, as well as a large circle of great nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Elva was predeceased by her father, George Spence; Mother, Maisie; Brother-in-law,
Frank Denney; Great – nephew, Lucas Fudge.
Her absence will be felt especially by her cousin Calvin Spence and his wife Edna who
were not only her family and neighbors for a lifetime, but also dearly loved friends and
her constant support.
It is impossible to condense Elva Spence’s life and influence into a few short sentences.
Her friendships and connections cover, not only her beloved community of Plum Point
and the surrounding areas, but reach around the globe and have left a mark in places
that she could never have imagined.
Her unwavering faith in God and her love of our Lord, Jesus Christ, was undeniable and
was the very center of her existence from the age of fifteen until her final breath at
eighty - six years of age.
She was many things to many people. An avid gardener, a published writer, a painter, a
local historian, the weather keeper, a carpenter, a house mother, a nurse assistant, a
seamstress, a Sunday School teacher, a clerk, and the list goes on. She was a devoted
caregiver to her mother, Maisie, and her grandparents, up until their deaths. A highly
intelligent woman, Elva was a wealth of knowledge and she had an amazing ability to
remember dates, times and the specific details of days long past.
.
She lived a humble lifestyle and yet she would tell you that she had more than she
needed and in her own words she recently said, “The government pays me well to be
old”. Her independent nature, strength of character and very specific ways of living were
traits that enabled her to face the many challenges that came throughout her years.
She will be forever loved and greatly missed by her family and by all who were fortunate
enough to have had her as a part of their lives. Included in this number, a blessing and
joy to her in her final months – Tommy, her little cat that she dearly loved and spoiled
completely.
Elva Spence – A life well lived.
