C.S. Lewis once wrote that friendship is born when one person says to another, “What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” I can vividly remember the very first time that I met Ward on the wharf in Cape St. Charles and I can honestly say that it was the beginning of a good friendship.
When I heard earlier of his passing my world was silent for a moment. I reflected on my personal memories of the many conversations that we had had over the years. We had a common interest in many things…politics, global affairs, community sustainability, the fishery, and much more…including bullshit (spoken with a true Labrador accent). There was never a shortage of issues to talk about. That may have had less to do with my interest… and more to do with Ward’s love for talking. I say that in jest, of course, since he would surely argue that the opposite was much closer to the truth. Ward had an amazing sense of humor. He could keep you entertained for hours with his litany of stories, jokes and one-liners.
He was truly a good man with a big heart.
He was an intelligent man who knew many sides of an issue but took a stand on the one that best suited his cause.
He was a considerate and caring man.
Most importantly…he was a family man who took a lot of pride in being surrounded by a big clan. One that has grown considerably since my days in Lodge Bay.
Plato once wrote, "an unexamined life is not worth living." Well, my friend, I just took a moment to examine yours…and I am confident that you would agree that it was worth every second.
My sincere condolences to you, Verna, and to Juanita, Carol, Brent & Myra and all Ward’s extended family and friends. Rest easy my friend and Godspeed. Over and out…
A fitting poetic tribute by John Quincy Adams – “The Hour Glass”
Alas! How swift the moments fly!
How flash the years along!
Scarce here, yet gone already by,
the burden of a song.
See childhood, youth and manhood pass
And age with furrowed brow,
Time was – Time shall be – drain the glass,
But where in time is now?
