Obituary of Frank M Guy
FRANK M GUY
1932 - 2023
Frank McDonald Guy passed away peacefully on September 4, 2023. The family is saddened by his passing but even more grateful and thankful for a life well-lived in faithful and consistent service and love for his family, his friends, his church, and his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Frank is survived by his two sons, Kerry Guy (Cheryl) and David Guy (Libby), four granddaughters; Lindsay (Michael), Ashley (Nathan), Samantha (Robert) and Alicia, and great-grandchildren, Alexander, Miriam, Levi and Caleb; brother Chesley Guy and sister-in-law Bessie Slade, as well as a close circle of lifetime friends from Corner Brook. Frank was predeceased by his wife of 40 years Valda Guy (Brown) in 1999 and wife of 14 years, Alma Guy (Hull) in 2015; parents, Bennett and Mabel Guy (nee Tulk); sisters Winnie, Hettie, Meta and Joyce.
Born in Twillingate March 16,1932, he was orphaned at 9 years of age and after some time with other family, started to forge a life on his own at 15 years of age. This eventually led him to Corner Brook, NL which is where he built his life. Pivotal to the life’s path that he charted was his acceptance of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour, and later marriage in 1959 to Valda Brown and acceptance into the Brown family by loving parents-in-law, Stanley and Emma. A gifted musician, Frank left a lasting mark in his community through his longtime service to The Salvation Army Corner Brook Citadel Corps in several concurrent impactful roles as Bandsman (50+ years), Singing Company Leader (children’s singing group), Organist (60+ years), Corps Treasurer and Corps Sergeant Major – the latter being the most senior layperson role at the Citadel. He also served for several years with Valda in The Salvation Army’s League of Mercy. Since his passing, several Salvation Army officers who previously served at Corner Brook Citadel have spoken highly of Frank’s invaluable support for them and the Corps. Frank also served for many years in The Gideons in Canada (now ShareWordGlobal), an organization committed to the distribution of The Holy Bible in Canada and around the world. Following his retirement in 1991, Frank could regularly be found playing his keyboard and leading singing at the Interfaith Home for Senior Citizens in Corner Brook. In later years following the death of Valda, Frank found love and companionship with his marriage to Alma White (nee Hull) and acceptance into the Hull family, with whom he enjoyed a close relationship. While accolades of Frank’s life are many, if he were still with us, he would have none of this. He was humble to a fault, would have eschewed self-aggrandizement, and was thankful for the love of his family and friends, owing it all to grace and unmerited favor of God.
Since 2019, Frank had been living in Calgary, most recently a resident of AgeCare Walden Heights. The family will be forever grateful for the kindness, compassion, and love that the staff of Walden Heights showed him. He was affectionally known by some as Papa or Uncle Frankie.
Most importantly, Frank has left his family with a legacy and example of love and a lifetime of service to God. And he was a Christian father in every sense of the word. He cared for his family deeply and prayed for them, by name, daily.
Visitation is at Fillatre’s Funeral Home on St. Mark’s Avenue on Saturday Sept 30th, from 2 – 4 pm and 7 – 9 pm. The family asks that any financial gifts in memory of Frank be directed to the Corner Brook Citadel Band; by cheque during visitation at Fillatre’s, by mail to the Citadel office or online via Frank Guy Memorial Fund.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at The Salvation Army Citadel on Clarence Street, Corner Brook at 2:30 pm on Sunday October 1st.
