In the early morning of October 11th, 2023 Grace Darling Hancock of Forteau, Labrador passed away peacefully at the Labrador South Health Centre. Grace was 95 years old (Almost 96).

Grace was born to Adelbert and Emily Roberts on November 18th, 1927 in Forteau. She married Stewart Hancock and they lived in Forteau and at Point Amour Lighthouse.

No longer by our side but forever in the hearts of her children Chesley (Juanita), Dorothy (Bert), Christine (Hollis), Alice (Kelvin), Clarissa (Les), Rick (Michele); grandchildren Pattijill , Curtis, Josclin, Trent, Janice, Donna, Christopher, Scott, Stacy, Tracy, Shelley, Matthew, Emily; great-grandchildren Tristan, Jackson, Daniel, Cassondra, Joshua, Jonah, James, Aleah, Jayden, Logan , Cameron , Tanisha, Domonic, Zoey, Sophie, Jack, Jeffrey, Ryan, Lexi, Tessa; great-great-grandchildren Delaney and Darcy.

She is predeceased by her husband Stewart , parents Adelbert and Emily, her siblings Ralph, Jack, Clarissa, Flossie, Thelma and Jeanette.

Grace and Stewart taught their children the life skills of gathering food by hunting, picking berries, gardening vegetables and fishing. She taught them knitting, sewing, cooking, doing up clothes and being part of a church community. Probably the most important skill she taught was the true sense of family as was seen with the many family gatherings which included her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren with many stories shared. Most of all she loved her family, rarely speaking it, yet it showed in her devoted actions. Grace was a member of the UCW, LOBA, a regular attendee to church and always loved going to sewing class.

Grace was “cute”, funny to some, stern to others. She loved cookies and sweets. She loved shopping. She was often heard talking about the weather saying “ it’s some grizzly out there today.” She is remembered ironing her clothes, baking cookies and using her binoculars. “Sunday supper would not be Sunday supper without jello and custard”.

Also leaving to mourn her siblings Nellie, Jessie and Gord (Rose) along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be held at Forteau United Church.

The funeral service will be held at Forteau United Church on Saturday, October 14th, 2023 at 2:00 pm. Interment to follow at the Forteau United Cemetery.
