Major Lucy Winnifred (Winnie) Louise Burt
It is with great sadness that the family and friends of the late Major Winnie Burt announce her passing on August 5th, 2020, at the Palliative Care Unit of the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, NL, at the age of 80 years.
Left to mourn are Duane (Patrick) Tompkins, Stephanie (Broc) MacWhirter, and Megan (William) Stewart, along with a large circle of cherished friends and relatives. Winnie was predeceased by her dear mother Grace Chaulk in 2002.
Winnie was born at Corner Brook on April 11th, 1940, but Deer Lake became her “home” when she moved there, as a teenager, with her mother.
Throughout her early life, Winnie was involved in Salvation Army church youth and worship activities, and it was this experience and upbringing that helped her to establish the solid Christian foundation and values upon which her entire life would be based.
Winnie attended Memorial University and taught school at Charlottetown, NL, for a year before returning to Deer Lake where she taught for another two years. Following that, she entered the “Servants of Christ” Session at the Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training in St. John’s. From there, Winnie was stationed in Lushes Bight for two years where she served as the Corps Officer and a teacher. After that, she was appointed to be the Corps Officer at Carter’s Cove, NL. Then following that, she served in several different positions at the Salvation Army’s Headquarters in St. John’s before being appointed to the Army’s Territorial Headquarters in Toronto where she spent the next 24 years in the organization’s Finance Department. Winnie retired in 1998 and returned to Deer Lake where she lived until her recent passing.
Funeral arrangements for Winnie have been entrusted to Fillatre’s Funeral Home in Deer Lake. However, due to Covid-19 Government restrictions, there will be no visitation. Persons wishing to provide expressions of sympathy are encouraged to do so in the funeral home’s online guest book. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Major Winnie Burt to Hope and Healing International (formerly Christian Blind Mission Canada), 3844 Stouffville Rd, P. O. Box 800, Stouffville, ON, L4A 7Z9 (www.hopeandhealing.org) or to the Gideon Bible Society.
In keeping with Covid-19 restrictions, a private funeral service will be held at the Salvation Army Citadel on Church Street in Deer Lake, on Saturday, August 8th, at 2:00 p.m. with Majors Wayne and Betty Ann Pike officiating. Interment will follow at the Deer Lake Interdenominational Cemetery.
